The Island's Beaches

Hilton Head's beaches draw visitors from all over the world. From the very beginning of modern day development, special care have been taken to protect this great natural resource. The following regulations, created by the Town of Hilton Head Island, and enforced by the beach patrol, were drawn up to help with that protection.

REGULATIONS

Animals:
October 1 - April 1 - No leashes required at any time. The animal IS required to be under positive voice control.
April 1 - May 25 - Animals must be on a leash between 10 AM and 5 PM.
May 25, until Monday of Labor Day weekend - No animals allowed on the beach between 10 AM - 5 PM.
Tuesday after Labor Day - September 30, - Animals must be on a leash from 10 AM - 5 PM.
October 1 - April 1- No leashes required at any time. The animal IS required to be under positive voice control.
On the beach or not, local law requires owners to clean up after their pets.
Seasonal Rules from April 1 - September 30,

Designated Swimming Areas:
No Stunt Kites between 10 AM - 6 PM.
No sand-sailing between 10 AM - 6 PM.
No fishing or surf casting.
No surfboards, boogie boards or other articles to ride the surf.
No frisbees or other team sports involving a ball.
No games with metal components (such as metal horseshoes).

Prohibited at the Beach all year long:
Alcoholic liquor, beer, wine Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) Littering, indecent exposure (nudity), disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, unauthorized vehicles, fires and fireworks, shark fishing

Also, removal, harming , or harassment of any live beach fauna (sea turtles, sand dollars, conchs, starfish, etc.); removal, alteration, or damage to dunes, sea oats, or other dune flora; operation, launching, or landing of unauthorized motorized watercraft, unauthorized commercial activity, sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m., uauthorized wearing of lifeguard emblems, insignias, etc.; solicitation or distribution of handouts.
